Introducing Laura Itkonen - The studio based in the heart of Helsinki specialising in ceramics. We talk to Finish designer Laura Itkonen about experimentation and her tactile designs.

About Laura Itkonen

1)   Introduce your company:

The main focus of my studio work is on visually detailed, tactile architectural ceramics designed to enrich both private and public spaces. Besides architectural ceramics, I also make tableware in small scale production. Retail design projects I continue to do in various projects.

2) Talk us through your latest product/s:

At 100% Design I’m showcasing architectural tiles and wall art pieces which are my great passion in the field of design. I like to mix the concepts of design and art with each other and architectural ceramics is ideal platform for it. Lately, I have been interested in the tiles on the rhythm created by the tile seaming. How it can make an art piece of it’s own by following the different shapes of the tiles.

3) What goals would you like to achieve for your company in the future?

My goal is to have projects where I can make artistic wall visualisations in public and private spaces, develop ceramic pieces with new technology and materials, experiment with totally new materials and combine these together. As a designer, I wish to design also for industry.

About 100% DESIGN

4) Why did you choose to exhibit at 100% Design?

London is culturally and artistically a very interesting place and I wanted to establish a wide international platform for my designs. The London Design Festival as a whole is also a very important venue and I wanted to be a part of it.

About the industry

5) A recent ‘Dezeen’ Article has highlighted the fact that the vast majority of designers are under 40 - Do you feel that design lacks maturity?

Not at all. Design always need young, fresh and brave thinking and doing so it can grow as a whole.

6) In contemporary society an online presence is key in order to grow your design firm – How do you utilize the internet to increase your customer base?

Social media is an internationally wide platform to get yourself seen and heard. That’s probably my main platform in the internet at the moment and one which I want to increase.

About the individual

7) What made you want to become a designer?

It just happened! After college I studied photography but I just didn’t feel enough passion so I put my hands on clay and I guess that was just love at first sight. During my studies at the University of Art and Design Helsinki, I became acquainted with my inner artist.

8) Establishing networks is important for an emerging design firm – How did you go about growing yours?

My goal for the future is to be seen in national and international venues. Also keeping regular contact to your existing contacts and making new ones whenever there’s a chance. Different social media channels are definitely useful as well.
