Introducing Junction Fifteen - The company creating award winning furniture for the domestic and contract markets. We talk to British designers David Lord and Ben Frost about their contemporary pieces that are full of character and playful charm.

About Junction Fifteen

1)   Introduce your company:

Established in 2012 by British designers David Lord and Ben Frost, Junction Fifteen launched their debut collection at LDF 2013. In May 2014 Junction Fifteen were awarded the highly regarded Design Guild Mark for their Olly Stool. 

The collection is manufactured using high quality sustainable materials and local craftsmanship. The collection's key material and theme is tubular steel, a versatile material perfect for creating strong structures with fluid form. All pieces are batch produced to ensure every product is of the highest quality.

2) Talk us through your latest product/s:

Our core family of products is the Olly family. We have decided to add to this range by introducing the Olly bench. We have utilised details from the award winning piece, and the resulting form is a phase of mitosis, with two Olly Stools seemingly in the process of duplication. Key details including the frame and seat holes are present to retain the strong family identity with other pieces in the Olly family.

In addition, we have created a variant of our Airo chair to include a timber back support.


3) What goals would you like to achieve for your company in the future?

We wish to grow our brand presence and be considered by interior designers and architects who wish to specify our pieces because of their aesthetic appeal and unique and recognisable form.

We want our pieces to evoke emotion with original designs that fly the flag for both British design and British manufacture.

4) Why did you choose to exhibit at 100% Design?

We wanted to create further awareness of our brand at LDF and felt that 100% Design was the perfect platform to achieve this.

5) A recent ‘Dezeen’ Article has highlighted the fact that the vast majority of designers are under 40 - Do you feel that design lacks maturity?

I think it is more relevant to look at exposure and experience rather than age to gauge maturity within design. Exposure to many design disciplines and manufacture processes are core values that are key to finding a good design solution. My experience in working for myself for over 12 years has aided in the ability to produce relevant and mature approaches to design.

6) In contemporary society an online presence is key in order to grow your design firm – How do you utilize the internet to increase your customer base?

Its essential to have an up to date website and we have customers finding us via our Instagram and Twitter accounts. We are also utilising other online selling platforms such as archiproducts and eporta to help people become aware of us and find us online.

About the individual

7) What made you want to become a designer?

Although I have always been creative and artistic I rather stumbled into design whilst studying Art foundation course 20 years ago. It was not until I was working on initial projects on this course did I fully become aware of the development process and the journey from idea to product. This journey fascinated and excited me and I went on to study product design at Sheffield Hallam where I realised design could evolve from a passion into a profession.

8) Establishing networks is important for an emerging design firm – How did you go about growing yours?

This is an essential part of growing a business and it is an area of the business that can suffer at busy times. An up to date online presence, good relationships with similar businesses and universities, and retaining relationships with colleagues from previous employment are all key. I also try to talk about what we can do as much as possible to increase awareness of our brand and our design capabilities.

This is why we value our presence at 100% Design to help people find out about us. We do not just design our own furniture, we can design solutions for others.
