Emerging Brands Spotlight: Flint Watches

flint watches

Introducing Flint Watches - A brand specialising in unique timepieces that bridge the gap between art and design. We talk to Harry Coulthard and Edward Tweddle about the launch of their Aravalli range.

About Flint Watches

1)   Introduce your company:

Flint Watches was born out of a passion for texture, materials and functional design. Sourcing unique materials we have created truly individual timepieces, for him and her, that bridge the gap between art and design.

After researching the market for just under two years, we discovered that the majority of dress watches were very similar in design. We set out to design a product that addressed these issues.

2) Talk us through your latest product/s:

Our latest range, is designed with a green marble bezel, sourced from the Aravalli mountains in North-West India. We chose this Verde Rajasthan marble for it’s crystalline character and rich natural colour. The light veins that run through this raw material render each Flint timepiece with a unique aesthetic.

Each watch is fitted with a Swiss movement, and a bespoke goat leather strap. More durable than cow hide, our straps are breathable, comfortable and naturally water resistant. Its distinctive natural texture is also an important component in our design, and overriding project. The straps are also fitted with a quick release pin, making them fully interchangeable, transforming the watch in seconds, with the injection of a different colour.

3) What goals would you like to achieve for your company in the future?

Above all we intend to continue following our core brand proposition, of producing designs with unique materials and striking textures. While maintaining a high level of build quality, so to produce a number of functional watch models in the process. We have various concepts in the pipeline, which we are dying to bring to market.

About 100% DESIGN

4) Why did you choose to exhibit at 100% Design?

The Emerging Brands section was a really exciting opening. The event offers us a great platform to introduce ourselves to the London design community. London with its reputation as the design capital of the world provides the perfect platform to launch Flint Watches.

About the industry

5) A recent ‘Dezeen’ Article has highlighted the fact that the vast majority of designers are under 40 - Do you feel that design lacks maturity?

I think this argument stems from an inevitable change in behaviour of young people towards design. As well as the negative outlook of designers from an older generation, whose business has possibly suffered from the changes accompanying the digital age.

Consumers want designers to be optimistic, fresh and inspirational. Design has been criticised in recent times for being too conceptual, and its assumed designers have little grasp on true craftsmanship.

6) In contemporary society an online presence is key in order to grow your design firm – How do you utilize the internet to increase your customer base?

From traditional forms of marketing & advertising, to Instagram and social - everything is now digital. We would be foolish to not make the most of every opportunity we have online. Initially we have focused on creating a balanced approach to growing our customer base, refraining from being too aggressive online.

About the individual

7) What made you want to become a designer?

The thrill of creating something, that adds value to peoples lives. As well as the large amount of freedom that comes with it.

8) Establishing networks is important for an emerging design firm – How did you go about growing yours?

Social has been our greatest tool to date. Instagram in particular has been a great way of creating some organic buzz around the product. Its users love for art and design make it the perfect platform for small designers to introduce themselves to the world, in a non-intrusive way.
