Emerging Brands Spotlight: Design By Motion
About the company
1) Introduce your company:
Design By Motion takes pride in breathing individuality and art back into sport. Each item is meticulously crafted, combining beautiful hand-finished wood with the highest quality leather, steel and carbon to create products guaranteed to intrigue, captivate and inspire.
2) Talk us through your latest product/s?:
Our Tempo race bike is the ultimate marriage of form and function. The frame is entirely made of walnut, hand-finished with five laminated layers for the optimal balance of weight and strength. Combined with a matt black Zipp carbon wheelset and Shimano Dura-Ace groupset, the Tempo bike is equally at home mounted on a wall as on the podium. We’ll be putting the bike through its paces at the exhibition, inviting visitors to post their fastest “flying kilometre”!
About 100% Design
3) Why did you choose to exhibit at 100% Design?:
At Design By Motion, we believe in engineering as an art form. Our products are unique and challenge perceptions of sport and sporting equipment. In sharing that boldness of vision, 100% Design were the natural choice of partners to exhibit our products.
4) What can visitors expect to see at your stand?:
Alongside our Materia bikes, we will be showing the journey from raw wood to end product in a series of wall-mounted installations alongside sports-related art and sculpture. We will also be hosting a competition, inviting visitors to put one of our bikes through its paces on a specially-designed static installation to post their fastest “flying kilometre” – and feel for themselves how form and function make for a beautiful ride.
About the industry
5) What would you say are the prominent trends within art design at the moment:
As lovers of wood, we are excited about the continued growth of sustainability and individuality as the dominant themes in art design today. Brands have finally taken a back seat, allowing products to speak for themselves. This is especially true of furniture design, where fantastically talented woodworkers like Tom Raffield, Matthew Burt and Rupert Williamson are pushing the boundaries of wood as a medium and the classic lines of Ercol are enjoying a long-overdue renaissance.
About the Individual
6) Do current trends in art/furniture inform your design decisions?
Developments in technology inform our design decisions more than trends in art or furniture. We are committed to creating the highest performance products by seamlessly integrating leading edge technology - including Bluetooth gears and carbon wheels – with the timeless luxury of leather and wood.
