Kirkby Design Presents Underground Vol. II at 100% Design
Launching at 100% Design during the London Design Festival 2019, Kirkby Design, a London based textile design studio, will present Underground Vol. II.
Following on from the success of their first collaboration with Transport for London (TfL) in 2013, Underground Vol. II is a collection of upholstery velvets derived from iconic moquette designs.
Recognisable to most as seating fabric, moquette is the patterned woollen material used on the Underground and wider Transport for London network. First applied to Underground seating in London in the 1930s it created a visual identity for London’s public transport.
Translating iconic moquette into a contemporary moment, Underground Vol. II features seven designs from the London Transport Museum archive, range from the 1930s to present day re-adapted as luxury upholstery velvets.
Underground Vol. II taps into the rich design history of TfL, celebrating an iconic aspect of London’s design identity.
The new collection will be presented in an original 1967 decommissioned Victoria Line London Underground tube carriage. Re-imagined as an immersive and experiential venue, visitors will be able to climb aboard and be taken on a journey to experience the historic designs through a completely transformed interior.
