Introducing Mairi Helena - The Edinburgh-based designer specialising in high-end luxury home accessories for interiors and fashion whose novel designs are created using influences from her photographic portfolio of Scotland. We catch up with Mairi to discuss how to grow an online presence, how to build networks and much more.

About the company

1) Introduce your company:

Mairi Helena is an emerging textiles & wallpaper surface design label based in Edinburgh, offering a high-end contemporary print range for interiors. Created through elements of my photographic portfolio to produce abstract surface prints, my collection includes lavish print velvet cushions, bold wallpapers and lampshades as well as velvet and linen fabrics.  Working within the interior and architectural trade industry, my particular target market includes commercial interiors, hotels & high end residential looking for statement print.

2) Talk us through your latest product/s?

Since my showcase at 100% Design last year, my collection has expanded to include twelve unique print designs which I offer as fabric by the metre (both velvet and now all as linen union in addition), wallpapers, velvet cushions as well as a limited collection as lampshades.

3) What goals would you like to achieve for your company in the future?

To further grow my connections within the interior trade industry in USA and Canada, a market that we are excited to be developing here at Mairi Helena. We are also establishing several key collaborations with partners within the industry and are always keen to explore new ways in which our print designs at Mairi Helena can connect us with forward-thinking and contemporary brands.

About 100% DESIGN

4 ) Why did you choose to exhibit at 100% Design?

To showcase our designs to a wider audience within the interior trade industry both within the UK and further afield. 100% Design is a great platform for emerging designers to present their collections to the industry during the LDF, in particular to interior designers, architects and the trade working within commercial interiors, the hotel and high end residential industry.

About the industry

5) A recent ‘Dezeen’ Article has highlighted the fact that the vast majority of designers are under 40 - Do you feel that design lacks maturity?

No, I find this fact exciting and a push towards contemporary, forward-thinking design in the industry.  Design is for exploring and pushing the boundaries!

6) In contemporary society an online presence is key in order to grow your design firm – How do you utilize the internet to increase your customer base?

I keep active on social media, across my twitter, facebook and pinterest platforms but most of all through my Instagram  (@mairihelena) where there is a wonderful, growing, friendly community as well as via my blog (www.mairihelena.co.uk/blog) where I enjoy writing about inspiring spaces, colourful interiors, influences and other like-minded contemporary brands.

About the individual

7) What made you want to become a designer?

The freedom for expression, to carve out my own vision and embrace my own individuality within design. I stay aware of trends but enjoy designing from my own influences that surround me.

8) Establishing networks is important for an emerging design firm – How did you go about growing yours?

Networking is key. I’m a member of Creative networking industries both locally and regionally for businesses within the field of art & design. My blogging also keeps me in contact with the wonderful interior bloggers that write about and promote brands within the industry. Online platforms such as Eporta are becoming increasingly helpful for smaller brands to have their work represented within such a large field. Facebook groups can be very supportive too. The social media era is making it a lot easier for brands to connect and collaborate which is very encouraging!
