Emerging Brands Spotlight: Cuco

Emerging Brands Spotlight: Cuco

Introducing Cuco - The Portuguese based handmade furniture company guided by a strong sense of experiencing the pieces, not only in a functional way but also in an emotional way. Creating stunning furniture pieces with the use of local crafts and materials from the Portuguese Countryside transformed with care by skilled artisans. We talk to designer Ricardo Prata about his latest products, challenges within the industry and much more.

About Cuco

1)   Introduce your collections:

The Collections are composed around the primitive elements (like the examples of nest and earth) that compose the natural world and reflect the patterns of construction that inspire us. The final aim of this project is to create beautiful pieces that create a more human and natural atmosphere to a large range of places, from domestic to corporate, defining an universal style.

2) Talk us through your latest      product/s?:

We are creating 2 new collections : Light and Bulb. As the previous ones they are inspired by natural forms. The Light collection will be inspired by the lightness of weight that cork wood can provide & The Bulb collection will give us inspiration for some different accessories like pendant lamps, designed in a more organic way.

3) Sourcing materials is notoriously hard for emerging design firms – How has this process been for yours?

This brand was born from a passion of designing furniture. It is also an extension of our daily routine. For us sourcing materials depends of a basic knowledge of local crafts and a constant search for new suppliers and techniques. It is obviously difficult to start a project but depends a lot on understanding your skills within the industry. We hope that we will reach a level of quality and technical knowledge to create beautiful, pratical and ethical objects that endure a long life. This is my view to reach the clients emotional desire and pratical needs.

About 100% DESIGN

4) Why did you choose to exhibit at 100% Design

I choose to exhibit at 100% Design , because I visited this exhibition in previous years and I found it well organised, being large but at the same time cosy for a small brand to expose.

About the industry

5) What challenges does the industry currently face, how do this impact on your business and what are you doing to counter them?

The challenges that the design/furniture industry faces are extremely diversified. Being part of a globalised world demands constant adaptation to different clients, different destinations and countries. I think everyone is trying to find answers to new situations and problems but this is part of life, which is also constantly changing.

About the individual

6) What made you want to become a designer?

I’m an architect, but I see my design work as an extension of my daily routine.

7) Establishing networks is important for an emerging design firm – How did you go about growing yours?

Networks are fundamental for an emerging design firm because they create a visibility of your work with an unlimited potential. It is also this exchange that justify the creation of objects. Maybe you can create an object with a selfish purpose – just for yourself – but it is the circuit that comes with the user that gives it a sense.

8) What advice would you give to someone considering a career/starting out in this industry?

The only possible advice is – you should be passionate!
