Your first memory of 100% Design?
My first show at 100% Design was 2 years after it started. I shared a stand with fellow a textile student.
Key product(s) launched at 100% Design...
The first products I had at the show were new at the time; large surfaces with applied photographic images, such as blinds and wallpapers; it was the the starting point for my collection.
I exhibited elsewhere, at shows with a retail focus, but 100% Design provided room for dialogue with people, not just buyers - at the show I picked up commissions and links with bigger, more established designers.
Impact and importance of the show - for you, the industry and London...
When it was first established, 100% Design had a buzz and energy of new design thinking coming together; it enabled people to connect with the industry, if you were fresh out of college, or well established. For me it was like a new world opening up.
It was an energising experience connecting with the industry; I'd just got a business-start up loan and was just dipping a toe into the water. 100% Design proved to be a great place for me as it showcased and nurtured new talent. The show was a nice size, not too overpowering and was full of energy.
Any other stories from 100% Design?
For me 100% Design was London's first design event that drew people in from around the world; suddenly the Italians had a show to visit - it opened up London as the design centre it is today.
What key encounters did you experience at the show (products and/or people) over the years? There were some great experiences at 100% Design, and some amazing opportunities that came out of it. In 1999 Inflate curated a group show, sponsored by Budweiser. As a result, Michael Marriot and I were supported on a visit to Seattle. 100% Design gave us the chance to visit and capture Americana. We came back and told the story through a series of products. We shipped a host of products back to the UK including the soft top Chrysler we'd driven around in. Some of the products from that gave rise to me working with SCP.
