Cloud Walk by Yu Jordy Fu
’Cloud Walk’, a-nine- meter long, white, intricate, horizontal, recycled paper chandelier, designed by Yu Jordy Fu, specially for 100% Design. 201AD, the Chinese invented paper, a marvelous material with a complex character. For thousands of years we used paper to write, paint and communicate our thoughts, dreams and desires. Paper – cutting is a unique art form, Chinese women use this graceful and intricate media to record the joy and surprises of their lives and decorate their homes.
Yu Jordy Fu has developed this ancient technique to create expressive and elaborate forms which break free from the two dimensional realm to a dreamlike three-dimensional landscape. The intricate paper cutouts are inspired by London, the movement, sound, sight, people and events.
As an architectural designer, Yu Jordy Fu thinks three-dimensionally: ‘I don’t see the chandelier as an object but a space. My passion is to create sensational spaces for people; ‘Cloud Walk’ celebrates the spatial relationship between people and the city of London - the existing, proposed and imaginary London.’ ‘Cloud Walk’ is light -weight, all treated with none-flammable spray, can be purchased in sections, and reinstalled for private or commercial spaces after 100% design.
The ‘Cloud Walk’ chandelier is sustainable: the material is recycled paper, the method of production is handmade, and the product is to be used with energy saving light bulbs. By introducing the Chinese paper-cutting tradition into a contemporary use, the chandelier is sustaining a culture.
