Penelope Batley 20 Apr 2011

Penelope Batley's Playful Lighting sculpture to animate any space

Penelope’s interest in the unexpected and over-looked, has fuelled her inventive and witty approach. She creates work, which happily blurs the boundaries between Design, Art and Craft.
Her work has an opulent, escapist ‘play on words’ humour, drawing from childhood memories. She captures the playfulness and childlike delight, of the Gigantic, presenting forgotten objects out of context and with new function.
Graduating from the Royal College of Art in 2009, her lighting ideas, such as ‘Big Bling’ necklace light and ‘Chandelier Earring’ lights won her the ‘Sir Terence Conran Foundation Award’.
Penelope has featured twice at 100% Design, (awarded by the Arts Council) and will the there again for 2011. She has been selected as ‘the new young female designer or the year’ by Deco Magazine, Germany. At Mint Shop, her work necklace light was the publicity shot for the exhibition ‘Mint Escapes’.
Recent exhibitions include the newly refurbished Museum of Costume, which formed the backdrop for an exciting nine Metre Necklace to cascade down into the Georgian stairwell.
Other commissions include: three ‘Crystal Chandeliers’ for a new Ted Baker store in Cambridge, the entrance piece, and bar Lighting for London Jewellery week, the Beijing Arts Festival, and the Barbican Arts Centre ‘The Surreal House’.
Many pieces have been borrowed for fashion and style shoots and featured in publications including The Telegraph, Elle Decoration, Elle, Vogue, Living Etc, LA TIMES, Grand Designs and Wallpaper* magazine.
Projects for 2011 will include creating a window installation for the Mostyn Gallery Llandudno, Electrum Gallery,100% Design and Contemporary Applied Arts.
