D*Haus … a Radical New Concept in Geometric Design
‘‘A volume is enveloped by a surface, a surface that is divided according to the generators and the directing vectors of the volume, accentuating the individuality of this volume’’ Le Corbusier
There is a growing understanding of how mathematics underpins our entire universe, even life itself, from the tiniest quantum level to the pleasing shapes and dimensions of the physical world we see around us. From the astonishing purity of the Pyramids to the Platonic solids of Euclidean geometry and onward, mathematics and architecture have always gone hand in hand.
Now The D*Haus Company have further developed this relationship by embracing Henry Ernest Dudeney’s discovery in 1908 of how a perfect square can evolve into an equilateral triangle, and translating the concept into a design philosophy.
Daniel Woolfson of The D*Haus Company explains, “The dissection of the square into 4 distinct shapes allows it to be rearranged to form the triangle. This concept alone is fascinating, but the possibilities are endless when applying this formula to the world of architecture and design. D*Haus works with this geometric puzzle at a variety of scales to adapt to architecture, furniture, lighting and lifestyle products.”
The concept includes a fully dynamic house which can unfold from a perfect square to an equilateral traingle to deal with the climatic conditions of the site on which it sits. At 100% Design, D*Haus will be showing two smaller examples of how the formula can be applied to create versatile, flexible and aesthetically inspiring objects for the home.
To realise the vision for both of these designs D*Haus have chosen to work in Corian®, a high-performance material which reflects the sense of quality, strength, touch and finish that are hallmarks of the D*Haus ideology.
D*Table
“An exact materiality is one that does not need a creator with a plan to generate form. It is capable of generating it (or finding it) itself. It is not an inert materiality that can acquire form only if commanded to do so by a transient being, but an active materiality drawing its morphogenic powers from a reservoir of imminent resources (multiple typological invariants of different kinds). Our form finding machines should reflect this new anti-theology (anti-teleology) and re-enchantment of the material world that follows from it”
Manuel DeLanda
A rotatable, dynamic table that can change shape from a perfect square to a perfect equilateral triangle with 6 different shapes in the stages between the 2 ‘complete’ forms. The table is highly interactive and flexible. Each section is constructed using Corian® as the surface material and can be made in any of the 100 colours available for the material.
The D*table measures 700w x 700l x 370h mm when in square form and is mounted on wheels for ease of use. The design also features sliding drawers and space for books on the top (displayed vertically in the slots) plus an integrated champagne bottle/plant pot holder. The table also has an option for ‘secret’ storage space or the ability to quickly tidy items away, as when it is in square form, all the draws and compartments are hidden!
For even greater functionality, each section of the D*Table can be manually detached from the other at its hinges and used separately as a stand-alone piece of furniture, meaning it can be adapted to fit the space and purpose, as required.
The D*Table design was originally conceived by Maty Grünberg (father of David Grünberg, one of the founders of The D*Haus Company), who says, “The relationship between the units and forms, as a form changes into another so that an object such as a table does not stay in a static condition, is of great interest to me. The transition from one form into another generates endless possibilities.” This piece was developed into two versions and two sizes for Aram Design Ltd. London.
D*Light
“Our eyes are constructed to enable us to see forms in light. Primary forms are beautiful because they can be clearly appreciated. Working by calculation, engineers employ geometric forms, satisfying our eyes by their geometry and our understanding by their understanding: their work is the direct line of good art.”
Le Corbusier
An Iconic light that is flexible, adaptable and ambient. The D*Light is a new and highly original light with limitless possibilities in terms of brightness, contrast and colour. Each of the 4 light chambers can change colour individually and each is fabricated from Corian® in the translucent colourways for the material.
The D*Light is 300w x 300l x 360h mm when in square form and each hinged chamber has a set of LED’s that can be individually or collectively controlled via remote control. A range of light colours and effects are possible, from all white through the spectrum, and in flash, fade and switching between (these settings can be automated). The system runs on mains power.
D*Possibilities
Because the mathematical formula is scalable and each element becomes modular, the concept has an extraordinary range of potential applications and each design can be modified in terms of size, material, colour, finish, etc.
