Inspiration - the shadow of a 19th century Victorian balloon chair. Although the Victorian chair has a lot of carved detail the shadow that it casts is simple - a flat surface with a profiled edge, we wanted to capture this in the design for a chair. Almost picking up this shadow and bend it into a chair.
There are no joints, bolts, screws, welds or connectors – created entirely out of one piece of flat steel.
The steel portrays the flatness of the shadow but also provides the strength and stability to create this chair.

The idea for this design came from folding socks into each other: as the fabric folds in on itself. We developed this idea by conjoining shapes as if they were socks stitched together, and produced the sock chair-bed.
The conjoined 'skins' of the bed and couch have the same volume as each other, but with only enough filling for one function at a time.
